Course of treatment

One of the goals of the therapeutic community is to teach an addict to take the responsibility for his/her actions. For this reason, the treatment is divided into certain stages that project a continuous growth of responsibility for one's actions.
Trial period – 2 weeks for adaptation in the community.
First stage  – no-contact –stage during which the person is expected to refuse any contacts with family and friends, do not use a phone, do not leave the community area. In this stage, the person, who has just commenced treatment, is not capable to control his addiction to drugs, thus, he/she cannot be responsible for many of his/her actions. These restrictions are imposed attempting to prevent a person from harmful contacts that may make an unstable condition of a patient even worse. It is only after a certain period that an addicted person starts to understand the principles of activities of the therapeutic community and adapts to them, learns to use the methods of assistance provided by the community and conducts the analysis of his/her past, only then the community can consider his/her application to give more responsibility, i.e. to transfer to the second stage of treatment.
Second stage  – limited-contact-stage – after a patient is granted permission from the community, he/she is allowed to leave the community for short periods and to communicate with his/her family supervised by more advanced community members or employees. This stage supposes the duties of more responsibility – that of the head of the community and other duties. During the second stage an addict does an important job – he/she writes a narcobiography, where he/she overviews the period of his/her addiction and disease progress.
Third stage  – responsibility stage – that allows an independent departure from the community with a prior notice. An addicted person of this stage is the master of the main self-assistance methods, he/she is able to avoid a relapse and thus he can take responsibility for his actions. He/she can supervise and teach other members of the community, to accompany them outside the community, to take the position of the head of the community. He/she also starts to integrate into the social environment – his family. He/she can start improving the decayed relationship with the family and at the same time feel safe since community is still providing a great support. From the beginning of the trial period to the third stage inclusively patients live within the community.
Fourth stage – free-contact-stage of socialization and integration into the society. During the fourth stage, a patient has to find a job, to commence the courses of vocational training. Social workers and their assistants help the patient to collect the information on the situation in the labour market, the opportunities to find employment and to find vacancies. They learn to prepare a CV and application letter and to present themselves to future employees properly. The sense of self-confidence is strengthened; addicted persons can test their professional suitability. That is the final stage of rehabilitation during which an addict has to acquire knowledge and job skills that would help him/her to integrate into the society. In this stage, an addict takes a personal responsibility for him/herself and his/her further life. During this stage, patients leave the community for an entire week, spend time searching for a job and come back to community during the weekends only. However, under necessity, they can live in the apartment that belongs to the rehabilitation centre on a temporary basis and get a temporary job.
